Academy 147 at AERO Asia 2025 – Solving China’s Technician Shortage

December 10, 2025

Academy 147, part of the Academy Aviation Group, made a strong showing at AERO Asia 2025 in China, reaffirming our commitment to solving one of Asia’s most critical aviation challenges: the shortage of qualified aircraft maintenance technicians. As China’s aviation market continues to boom, the need for skilled technicians to maintain expanding fleets has never been more urgent.

A Growing Demand for Aviation Maintenance Technicians in Asia

The global aviation industry is facing a serious shortage of maintenance technicians and Asia is experiencing the most acute demand. According to the latest Boeing “2025 Pilot and Technician Outlook,” ¹ the industry will require 710,000 new maintenance technicians globally by 2044.

Given Asia-Pacific’s rapid fleet growth and increasing air travel, the region is expected to absorb a large share of this demand. The expanding commercial fleet, alongside rising utilization and maintenance needs, is driving this shift.²

At the same time, the industry is facing a demographic challenge: many experienced technicians are reaching retirement, and training pipelines have not scaled sufficiently to replace them.³

As a result, Asia–Pacific’s MRO ecosystem is under pressure. According to recent coverage of the region’s MRO growth, shortages in skilled technicians and engine-shop capacity are causing bottlenecks, especially as airlines rely more heavily on maintenance services for fleet upkeep and longevity.

Without a robust supply of qualified maintenance personnel, growth in fleet size and operations could be constrained, a risk for aviation, MRO providers, and the broader aviation infrastructure in China and Asia.

AERO Asia 2025 showcased a wide range of new aviation technologies, including several experimental aircraft and an unmanned aircraft that captured significant attention. Standing in front of this innovative platform, Richard Dam- COO of Academy 147 reflected on how rapidly aircraft technology is evolving and what that means for the future of aviation maintenance. He shared an important reminder:

“Even if an aircraft can fly without a pilot, you will always need technicians to maintain the aircraft, and that’s a wise lesson we must never forget.

No matter how advanced aviation technology becomes – whether unmanned, remotely operated, or experimentally engineered – highly trained maintenance technicians remain essential to keeping aircraft safe, compliant, and operational.

Whether you are an MRO provider or aviation authority seeking to strengthen your maintenance workforce or a professional looking to build a career in aircraft maintenance, we are ready to collaborate.

Get in touch with Academy 147 today to explore training pathways, certification options, and customized programs for your fleet. Let’s join forces to build the skilled maintenance workforce that will keep Asia’s skies flying safe, efficient, and future-ready.
