On Aviation Maintenance Technician Day, we pause to honor those silent guardians of the sky: the technicians. Our instructors and students whose hands, minds, and hearts keep aviation safe.

In a heartfelt video message we’re proud to share today, our COO Richard Dam reflects on what it means to be an aviation maintenance technician (AMT).
“I’ve always had a fascination with how things work, especially aircraft. The precision, the responsibility, and the challenge drew me in. But what kept me here is the realization that this job isn’t just about turning wrenches, it’s about discipline, precision, and a mindset of constant accountability.”
That mindset is something we see every day in our classrooms and hangars. It’s in the careful inspection before a final exam. It’s in the questions our students ask, not just for answers, but for understanding. It’s in the look of quiet pride when they finish a task knowing it was done the right way.
AMTs Are More Than Technicians – They’re the Backbone of Aviation
When asked what he loves most about the profession, Richard put it beautifully:
“What I love is that every inspection I carry out contributes to someone’s safety in the air. It’s meaningful work. It challenges not just your hands, but your head and heart too.”
This is the heart of our industry. AMTs are not always visible to passengers, or even pilots, but they are absolutely vital. They are guardians of the sky. Every bolt tightened, every system checked, every report logged, it all reflects a deep sense of integrity and care.
Why Aviation Maintenance Technician Day Exists: Charles Taylor’s Legacy
This day also honours the legacy of Charles Edward Taylor, the first aviation mechanic who built and maintained the engine for the Wright brothers’ aircraft. His story is a reminder that behind every innovation in aviation is someone with a toolkit, a manual, and an unwavering commitment to doing things right.
Today, we see that legacy in our instructors who go the extra mile to prepare students not just for exams, but for life on the line. We see it in our students who stay late to review their notes one more time. And we see it in the messages from alumni who now work around the world and still carry the lessons and values they learned here.

One of the most powerful lessons Richard shares with every student is simple but essential:
