Business Aviation Growth Creates New Training Needs

Business aviation maintenance training is becoming one of the most important topics for operators, MROs, and technical teams as the sector continues to grow. At AERO Friedrichshafen 2026, this was clear across the halls, the static display, and the conversations we had at Academy 147’s Booth.

When we walked the halls at AERO Friedrichshafen 2026, the message was clear: business aviation is not standing still. Aircraft manufacturers, operators, MROs, technology providers, training organisations, and regulators were all present in one place, and the conversations were not only about aircraft on display. They were about capability, readiness, aircraft-specific competence, and the people responsible for keeping aircraft airworthy.

AERO Friedrichshafen 2026 confirmed what we are already seeing across the market: business aviation growth creates new training needs.

The official AERO recap reported around 37,000 visitors from 88 countries, 860 exhibitors from 50 countries, and more than 550 accredited media representatives. The organisers also identified business aviation as the event’s strongest growth segment, with the Business Aviation Dome expanded by 50% and business aviation exhibitors occupying Hall A1, Hall A2 and parts of Hall A3.

Those numbers are important, but from a maintenance training perspective, the more important question is what they mean operationally.

More aircraft activity means more pressure on technical teams. More fleet diversity means more type-specific knowledge requirements. More advanced systems mean instructors must be able to connect regulatory training with real maintenance practice. And more competition for experienced technicians means operators and MROs cannot afford to treat training as a last-minute administrative task.

Training has become part of maintenance strategy.

Why business aviation growth creates pressure on maintenance teams

AERO Friedrichshafen describes the event as an international meeting place for business and general aviation, bringing together manufacturers, operators and aviation experts from around the world. Its visitor profile specifically includes aircraft operators, flight schools and training organisations, MRO companies, suppliers, manufacturers and business aviation companies.

That is exactly the environment where aircraft maintenance training needs become visible.

At Academy 147, we spend a lot of time speaking with operators and maintenance organisations about the practical side of training: which aircraft are entering the fleet, which engineers need type exposure, what delivery format is realistic, how practical training is planned, and how soon certifying or support staff need to be ready.

AERO compressed many of those conversations into four days.

The official AERO exhibitor directory listed Academy 147, part of Academy Aviation Group, as an EASA Part-147 approved provider of aircraft maintenance training, offering B1/B2 theory and practical courses, General Familiarization and refresher training for fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft. It also placed us under Business Aviation and Career & Education, which reflects where our work sits in the industry: between aircraft, regulation, people and operational readiness.

That positioning matters because business aviation maintenance is not a generic training environment. Operators are dealing with mixed fleets, different aircraft families, customer expectations, short planning windows and high availability requirements. In that context, training must do more than tick a box. It must build confidence that transfers into the hangar and onto the line.

Business aviation growth is also a maintenance-readiness story

It is easy to view business aviation growth through aircraft deliveries, static displays and OEM announcements. Those are important, but they are only one side of the story.

Every aircraft delivered, acquired or added to an operation eventually creates a maintenance requirement. Every new configuration, avionics suite, engine variant or operational profile creates a knowledge requirement. Every technician assigned to a new aircraft type needs structured training before technical confidence can be expected.

AERO’s own reporting shows how visible business aviation was at the 2026 event. The organizers stated that business aviation had the highest growth rate at the show and that no other European trade fair that year allowed visitors to directly compare a larger number of business aircraft. Aircraft on display ranged from ultra-long-range business jets such as the Bombardier Global 6500 and Dassault Falcon 6X to turboprops, piston aircraft, light aircraft and helicopters.

That range is exactly why aircraft-specific training is becoming more important.

A technician who has good general experience still needs aircraft-level understanding. Systems architecture, access logic, avionics integration, troubleshooting flow, maintenance documentation and practical task execution all differ from type to type. The further the industry moves into advanced avionics, data-driven operations and increasingly integrated platforms, the more important it becomes that training is specific, structured and delivered by people who understand the aircraft in service.

GAMA’s 2025 shipment data adds further context. Business jet shipments increased from 764 in 2024 to 854 in 2025, an 11.8% increase. More aircraft in the market means more long-term maintenance and training demand, especially when combined with rising utilization, ageing aircraft in certain regions and pressure on MRO capacity.

This is why we do not see aircraft maintenance training as a support function sitting behind the business. We see it as one of the foundations that allows business aviation to grow safely.

The technical environment is becoming broader in business aviation maintenance training

One of the strongest takeaways from AERO 2026 was how wide the technical conversation has become.

EASA’s recap of the event said AERO brought together 37,000 people from 88 countries and more than 850 exhibitors to discuss innovation, safety, sustainability and the future competitiveness of the sector. EASA also noted that its experts covered domains including aircraft certification, propulsion systems, environmental protection, avionics, design organizations, air operations, flight crew licensing, maintenance, cybersecurity, recruitment and applicant services

That list is a useful snapshot of the modern aviation maintenance environment.

Maintenance training today cannot be separated from the wider ecosystem. Engineers and technical teams are working around more connected aircraft, more software-driven processes, more digital records, more complex supply chains and more regulatory expectations. Maintenance decisions are no longer only about the aircraft in front of the technician; they connect to planning, continuing airworthiness, operational control, documentation, safety management and customer availability.

This is especially true in business aviation, where aircraft availability is often highly visible to the owner, operator or client. Downtime has commercial and operational consequences. A minor knowledge gap can become a troubleshooting delay. A training gap can become a scheduling problem. A lack of aircraft familiarity can reduce confidence in decision-making.

From our perspective, that is where quality training has the greatest value: it gives technical personnel the structure to understand the aircraft and the judgement to apply that knowledge correctly.

The technician shortage makes training capacity more important

The need for qualified aviation maintenance personnel is not a distant forecast. It is already influencing the way operators and MROs plan.

Boeing’s 2025–2044 Pilot and Technician Outlook forecasts demand for 710,000 new maintenance technicians over the next 20 years in the commercial aviation sector, while also stating that effective training and an adequate supply of personnel remain critical to maintaining the health, safety and prosperity of the aviation ecosystem. Boeing is clear that this specific forecast does not include business aviation or civil helicopter demand, but the wider signal is still relevant: aviation needs a long-term technical workforce pipeline.

IATA also identifies skilled labour shortages as one of the causes of current aviation supply-chain pressure. It notes that shortages of skilled labour reduce aircraft availability, lengthen maintenance turnaround times and raise costs across the industry. IATA further states that replacing experienced maintenance personnel is not simple, because it typically takes two to three years for new technicians to reach full productivity.

This is a critical point for training organisations and operators alike.

Recruitment alone does not solve the problem. Hiring a technician is only the beginning. The industry must also develop that technician into someone who is effective on specific aircraft, within approved procedures, under real operational pressure.

That development requires training capacity. It requires instructors. It requires practical exposure. It requires course planning that fits the operator’s aircraft and operational reality.

At Academy 147, this is the part of the discussion we believe needs more attention. Workforce demand is often discussed in terms of numbers, but maintenance capability is not built by numbers alone. It is built by structured technical progression.

MRO demand is rising, and training has to keep pace

The MRO market is also under pressure.

Oliver Wyman reports that global MRO demand reached $136 billion in 2025, up from $126 billion in 2024, and is expected to approach $193 billion by the end of the decade. The same report points to ageing fleets, rising demand for parts and labour, technical engine challenges and supply-chain constraints as contributors to cost pressure, capacity bottlenecks and longer turnaround times.

Although that report looks broadly at the aviation market, the maintenance logic applies directly to business aviation: capacity matters.

If parts are delayed, technicians need to be better prepared to troubleshoot efficiently. If maintenance slots are tight, operators need confidence that engineers understand the aircraft and can work effectively within approved procedures. If experienced staff are retiring, younger technicians need stronger training pathways and more exposure to aircraft-specific systems.

Training will not solve every MRO bottleneck, but weak training makes every bottleneck worse.

This is why we believe business aviation operators should look at training earlier in the aircraft planning cycle. When a new aircraft type is added, when staff move roles, when maintenance scope changes, or when an operator sees repeated knowledge gaps around a platform, training should be part of the operational response.

Aircraft-specific competence is where confidence is built

In aircraft maintenance, there is a difference between awareness and competence.

A General Familiarisation course can give technical and non-technical aviation personnel a structured understanding of an aircraft’s systems, layout and operating logic. B1/B2 theory and practical training go deeper, supporting the knowledge and hands-on requirements needed by maintenance personnel working toward type-level competence. Refresher training helps restore confidence and standardise understanding for teams already familiar with a platform.

Each of these training levels has a place.

The important point is matching the training to the operational need.

A CAMO team may need better system awareness to support planning and continuing airworthiness decisions. A technician moving onto a new aircraft family may need General Familiarisation before deeper training. Certifying staff require more structured theoretical and practical type training. An operator with mixed fleets may need differences training or recurrent support to keep teams aligned.

At AERO, many of our most valuable conversations were about this practical matching process. Which aircraft? Which team? Which approval environment? Which delivery format? Which timeline? Which operational outcome?

That is the kind of conversation that separates a training provider from a course seller.

One of the significant moments for Academy 147 at AERO Friedrichshafen 2026 was our participation in the launch of TAB – Technology · Aviation · Business.

TAB officially launched at AERO on 22 April 2026 as a new global industry association bringing together aviation technology companies to help shape standards for next-generation digital aviation systems. The association was formed by 30 aviation software and technology companies, with a stated goal of improving coordination between technology providers and aviation businesses.

A key priority for TAB is the development of shared digital standards that allow aviation platforms to integrate more easily.

Academy 147 was proud to be among the founding members who signed the TAB charter at AERO Friedrichshafen, represented on stage by Krste Atanasovski.

For us, this was not separate from aircraft maintenance training. It was directly connected to where the industry is going.

Modern maintenance teams are increasingly working within digital ecosystems: electronic records, planning platforms, connected documentation, software-based troubleshooting, data-led operations and integrated aviation systems. The aircraft remains at the centre, but the environment around the aircraft is changing.

That means the future maintenance professional will need more than mechanical and avionics knowledge in isolation. They will need technical adaptability. They will need to understand how aircraft systems, digital tools, operational data and regulatory processes interact.

Our role as a training organisation is to stay close to that evolution.

The value of meeting the industry face to face

Our booth at AERO was built for conversation.

During the show, we welcomed operators, partners, maintenance professionals and aviation colleagues at A2-203. We hosted a cocktail gathering with drinks, light bites and space for informal discussions after a full day on the show floor. We also organized a lucky draw for a General Familiarization course, giving visitors a practical reason to engage with our training team and learn more about our portfolio.

These moments matter because aviation is still a relationship-driven industry.

A training requirement often starts with a practical conversation: an operator preparing for a new aircraft, a maintenance manager trying to plan staff availability, an engineer looking for the right next qualification, or a partner trying to understand course scope and delivery options.

The informal setting around the booth helped us have better conversations. Not every discussion needs to start with a formal meeting room. Sometimes the most useful technical insights come when people have time to speak openly about what is happening in their operation.

That was one of the real benefits of AERO for Academy 147. We were able to listen closely to the market.

What we took away from Friedrichshafen

Our main takeaway from AERO Friedrichshafen 2026 is simple: growth is creating pressure on capability.

Business aviation is growing. Aircraft are becoming more advanced. MRO demand is rising. Skilled technicians are in short supply. Digital aviation is moving faster. Operators need their people to be ready, not only qualified on paper.

For Academy 147, this reinforces the direction we are already taking: aircraft-specific training, credible instructors, flexible delivery and a close understanding of what operators and MROs actually need from a training partner.

We left Friedrichshafen with stronger relationships, valuable market insight and a clear sense that maintenance training is becoming more strategic for business aviation operators.

The strongest organisations will be the ones that plan training before capability becomes a bottleneck.

They will identify where their teams need aircraft-specific knowledge. They will invest in practical competence. They will use General Familiarisation, B1/B2 training, differences training and refresher programmes in a structured way. They will choose instructors who understand the aircraft and the maintenance environment.

AERO Friedrichshafen 2026 was a strong event for general and business aviation, but for us it was also a reminder of responsibility.

Every aircraft on display depends on people who understand how to maintain it. Every operator planning growth needs technical teams who can support that growth safely. Every new technology entering aviation eventually reaches the maintenance environment.

That is why training must evolve with the industry.
